Proposals were presented today at a press conference by PS parliamentary vice-president Pedro Delgado Alves, ahead of the parliamentary debate and vote on the general and final global amendments put forward by PSD and CDS for the reconsideration of the foreigners’ law.
A decree from the Government was blocked by the Constitutional Court last August, and Pedro Delgado Alves stated that PS is open to “improving” it constructively and in dialogue, aiming to address the constitutional concerns more robustly.
In front of journalists, the socialist vice-president emphasized that the issues with the foreigners’ law are not only constitutional but also about avoiding economic disadvantages for Portugal and creating safe migration channels.
During the press conference, Pedro Delgado Alves did not set any “red lines” to allow understanding that could lead PS to abstain, at least.
He also acknowledged that the PSD/CDS draft, as currently written, might address the norms struck down by the Constitutional Court in August. “But there are other errors,” he cautioned.
