During a debate in the Assembly of the Republic regarding the Government’s proposal to reduce IRS, PS deputy António Mendonça Mendes announced that the party “will not hinder” the executive’s measures and will present “only one proposal” to ensure “that nothing is given with one hand and taken with the other.”
“And this proposal is as follows: to ensure that what is in the law is fulfilled, meaning that young doctors, lawyers, nurses can continue to receive both the IRS Jovem as well as the salary bonus from the deduction of their tuition fees, thereby ensuring that this tax cut is funded by the economy and not by the Portuguese people,” he stated.
António Mendonça Mendes argued that the Government’s proposed IRS reduction is not “for the middle classes,” highlighting that it is more favorable for deputies than, for instance, “for a teacher at the last grade, a doctor at the start of their career, or a nurse at the last grade.”
“This tax reduction is not a tax reduction for the middle classes. Let’s admit and accept that,” he emphasized.
The PS deputy further considered that it is the Government’s responsibility to ensure that this IRS reduction “is paid for by the economy and not through increased taxes or fiscal justice in other sectors.”
“And it is up to the Government, in this context where the economy shows signs of slowdown and the budget situation shows signs of deterioration, to ensure today that this IRS reduction will not be later turned into sacrifices,” he said, stressing that this is the purpose of the amendment proposal that PS will present in detail.
