PS will vote against the State Budget if the Government wants to make changes to labor laws.

“We are totally against budget options that support the labor legislation the Government wants to approve,” stated José Luís Carneiro in Faro, at the conclusion of the “For Cohesion and Territorial Valorization” route along the National Road 2 (EN2), traversing the country.

The draft project of labor legislation reform, approved by the Government and presented on July 24 under the name “Trabalho XXI,” aims to revise more than 100 articles of the Labor Code and, even before the related negotiations with social partners, has already faced opposition from trade unions.

José Luís Carneiro reiterated that “if the labor legislation is backed by the budget, it will naturally face opposition from the Socialist Party.”

“The Government intends to alter the Basic Health Law. If the State budget underpins fundamental changes to public health services, it will also have our opposition,” affirmed the PS general secretary.

The socialist leader further warned that “if the State budget supports altering the public nature of […] social protection and public social security, it will naturally face opposition from the Socialist Party.”

“We must wait, but now we will wait for the Government’s move, as the ball is now in their court,” José Luís Carneiro said.

According to the Budget Framework Law, “the Government drafts and presents to the Assembly of the Republic, by October 10 each year, the proposal for the State Budget for the following financial year.”
