“The CDS-PP Regional Council has mandated the party’s president to negotiate a coalition with the Social Democratic Party for the upcoming local elections,” stated José Manuel Rodrigues, the president of the Madeiran Christian Democrats, to journalists.
The agreement between the two parties is expected to be based on the deal made in the previous local elections, during which the PSD and CDS-PP ran together in 7 out of the 11 municipalities in the archipelago, he added.
“The CDS believes that it is necessary to strengthen political, economic, and social stability in our region, which naturally involves also reinforcing both the PSD’s and CDS’s positions in local power in the upcoming local elections,” emphasized José Manuel Rodrigues, speaking on the sidelines of the Regional Council and Political Commission meetings at a hotel in Funchal.
Four years ago, the CDS-PP ran independently in the municipality of Santana, which it won with an absolute majority, while the PSD did the same in Câmara de Lobos and Calheta, also securing absolute majorities. The two parties supported the candidacy of the Ribeira Brava Primeiro movement in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.
The goal is for the coalition to “repeat the victories achieved” in 2021 and “go further, winning municipalities currently held by the opposition.”
In the last local elections on September 26, 2021, the PSD won in the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos and Calheta, the CDS-PP secured a win in Santana, and the PSD/CDS-PP coalition was victorious in Funchal, São Vicente, and Porto Santo.
The municipalities of Machico, Porto Moniz, and Ponta do Sol are led by the PS, and Santa Cruz by JPP, while in Ribeira Brava, the Ribeira Brava em Primeiro Movement won.
