At a press conference intended to present PSD and CDS proposals to amend the Budget, Hugo Carneiro emphasized that the upcoming year “is profoundly challenging,” making the implementation of the Portuguese budget “more demanding.”
“I appeal to the sense of responsibility that parties with parliamentary representation should have in the proposals they make to amend the Budget so that the surplus is not jeopardized. The country’s image demands it; we must not squander the credit Portugal has gained with its good public accounts,” he stated.
Earlier, in the parliament, also at a press conference on the budget’s specialty process, the PS proposed that any eventual “one-time bonus” in pensions should be converted into a permanent increase.
Confronted with this proposal from the PS—the party that facilitated the Budget’s general approval through abstention—the social-democratic vice-bench leader responded: “The purpose today, at this press conference, is to present the PSD and CDS proposals.”
“We will have the opportunity to discuss and debate all the proposals that the parties are presenting. At the appropriate time, we will engage in that debate and see how the parties decide to vote on all these proposals. I do not have a crystal ball to predict how the parties will behave, and therefore, I appeal to the sense of responsibility,” he declared.
On Social Security matters, PSD deputy Isaura Morais presented a proposal to include in the Budget a clarification on “the payment of a new extraordinary pension supplement, as occurred in 2024 and this year, based on the evolution of budget implementation, without jeopardizing the system’s sustainability and the future of pensions for new generations.”
