PSD candidate in Vila Nova de Paiva is a former elected president… by the PS

The political committee of the PSD in Vila Nova de Paiva has endorsed José Morgado Ribeiro as the candidate for the presidency of the Municipality and Carlos Silva Reis for the Municipal Assembly. Both will run as independent candidates on the party’s lists.

José Morgado, who served as the mayor of Vila Nova de Paiva for three consecutive terms with the PS, announced his independent bid for presidency in March.

“We recognize his merit, and his availability matched the candidate profile we wanted. Our main goal is to win the elections, and this candidacy was agreed upon with José Morgado, leaving us very confident,” stated Paulo Loureiro, the head of the local party committee.

Paulo Loureiro considers the support for José Morgado a firm step for PSD to present a credible, unified project focused on the interests of Vila Nova de Paiva in this year’s municipal elections.

In March, José Morgado indicated his independent candidacy was prompted by numerous requests from residents, business leaders, and local institutions urging him to run.

The PSD asserts that José Morgado accepted the candidacy with a sense of responsibility and determination to prioritize the municipality’s interests, emphasizing his commitment to a sustainable, participatory, and transparent development project.

“We are eager to win this Municipality and leverage the national momentum, as it could help attract more central administration investment to our municipality. We hope to be in time to capitalize on this opportunity,” admitted Paulo Loureiro.

José Morgado has outlined “five or six strategic plans” for the municipality, focusing on administrative modernization, environment, mobility, education, economy, and culture, sports, and tourism.

José Morgado, 57, an attorney by profession, is married with two children and seeks to lead the council against the current PS mayor, Paulo Marques, who is in his first term.

In 2021, 3,255 voters participated in the Vila Nova de Paiva elections, accounting for 54.51% of those registered. Out of these, 43.59% (1,419 votes) supported the PS, resulting in two mandates.

The opposition comprised two mandates for the PSD, with 34.16% (1,112 votes), and one seat for Nós Cidadãos! with 16.80% (547 votes).
