PSD/CDS-PP achieves “historic victory” in Guimarães after 36 years of PS

“It’s a historic victory. The people of Guimarães wanted change, they sent a clear signal, and this victory is significant. We do not yet know the final results with precision, but it is a great victory for the coalition Juntos por Guimarães after the PS governed for 36 years,” stated Ricardo Araújo, speaking to the Lusa news agency.

By 11:00 PM, according to the candidate from the PSD/CDS-PP, there were still two parishes left to be counted, which would not affect the coalition’s victory, with an additional possibility of securing an absolute majority.

“We may still achieve an absolute majority, it’s difficult but possible,” added the deputy in the Assembly of the Republic.

Currently, the municipal executive of Guimarães, in the Braga district, consists of seven elected members from the PS and four from the PSD/CDS-PP coalition.

Ricardo Araújo, a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, was the lead candidate for the coalition Juntos por Guimarães (PSD/CDS-PP).

Ricardo Costa, current chairman of the PS council and deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, was the PS candidate.

The CDU—United Democratic Coalition, which includes the PCP—Portuguese Communist Party and the PEV—Ecologist Party “The Greens,” had Mariana Silva as the lead candidate for the council in these municipal elections.

Nuno Vaz Monteiro was the candidate from the Chega party.

Domingos Bragança (PS), elected in 2013, did not run again for the position of council president due to term limit laws.
