The “Political Agreement for the City of Porto” outlines that the commitment will be fulfilled through a coalition of the three signatory parties, with political support from the citizens’ movement. The concrete terms of the coalition will be detailed in an addendum.
“This is a dynamic project open to participation from all residents of Porto, regardless of their status or political-ideological orientations. Joining this project does not entail any other commitment beyond the civic purpose of aspiring to live in a better city,” the document states.
The four signatories support a candidacy for City Hall, the Municipal Assembly, and all Parish Assemblies, led by Pedro Duarte. The aim is to promote governance based on humanist values, the defense of individual liberties, and the assurance of equal opportunities for the people of Porto.
The parties commit to developing, in collaboration and constant dialogue, a municipal project focused on the future, stability, and welfare of the residents of Porto.
The document will be signed by the president of the PSD local branch, Alberto Machado, the president of the CDS-PP local branch, César Navio, the coordinator of the Porto Liberal Initiative, Hugo Beirão Rodrigues, and the spokesperson for the civic movement, orthopedic surgeon Marta Massada.
The agreed project has an inherent vocation for innovation and future vision, based on respect and admiration for the work undertaken during past municipal mandates led by the independent movement of President Rui Moreira, which included CDS, contributing significantly to elevating Porto to a place of excellence.
The future program aims to motivate the city to become a national and international reference in vital areas, embodying the ambition to strengthen social cohesion, sustainable development, and the quality of life for every citizen.
For the coalition, Porto should be an inclusive and competitive city where economic progress translates into more and better opportunities for all, and where each resident feels actively involved in building the collective future.
The project focuses on the residents of Porto, addressing their problems and aspirations, giving priority to issues of security, traffic and mobility, housing, health, employment, economy, and culture.
The commitment also aims to establish the foundations for a city hall that assumes a leadership role not only at the local level but also regionally, strengthening Porto as the engine of development for the North of the country.
“The city should establish itself as a convergence point for talent, innovation, and investment, promoting collaboration between neighboring municipalities and enhancing synergies that benefit the entire region,” it states.
For the coalition, reinforcing its influence within the national context, Porto will contribute to a more balanced and cohesive country, reducing asymmetries and promoting sustainable growth.
Besides Pedro Duarte, other candidates for the Porto City Hall include Manuel Pizarro (PS), Diana Ferreira (CDU), Nuno Cardoso (Porto Primeiro movement), Vitorino Silva (RIR), António Araújo (Porto à Porto movement), Aníbal Pinto (Nova Direita), Sérgio Aires (BE), and the current vice-president Filipe Araújo, as an independent.
The current executive is composed of six members elected by the independent movement of Rui Moreira, three elected by the PS, two from the PSD, one from the CDU, and one from the BE.
The municipal elections are expected to be held between September 22 and October 14 of this year.
