The final discussions on the State Budget for 2026 (OE2026) saw Hugo Soares arguing that Ventura’s reasons for opposing the budget are unfounded. He suggested that the party is opposing the budget out of stubbornness to avoid “standing in the photograph with the PS while approving the budget.”
Hugo Soares stated, “When the PS is on the side of the solution, Chega wants to be on the side of destruction.”
“I must say to the country, to Chega and to the PS: what matters very little to the Portuguese is this political game of not wanting to appear in the photograph not next to the PSD, but with the Portuguese,” he commented.
Applauding the PS’s decision to abstain, the parliamentary leader of the PSD reiterated a belief shared the previous day by the prime minister, highlighting that this abstention does not mean that the socialists had decided “to stand by the Government.”
Chega announced today that it will vote against the Government’s State Budget proposal for the next year (OE2026) in general terms. Speaking to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, nearing the end of the general debate of the OE2026, André Ventura explained the vote against by arguing that the Government’s proposal “gives with one hand and takes with the other.”
