The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has strongly condemned the decision by the Government of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau to expel the delegations of Portugal’s news agency, RTP, and RDP from the country. Ricardo Carvalho, deputy secretary-general of the PSD, expressed this disapproval, emphasizing the fundamental role these media outlets play in providing information and upholding the rule of law, as well as supporting Portuguese communities and promoting Portuguese culture.

This response follows the Guinean government’s move to suspend these media agencies from broadcasting, requiring their representatives to leave the country by Tuesday, without providing an explanation for the decision.

Ricardo Carvalho stated the action does not directly affect bilateral relations, noting Guinea-Bissau as a friendly nation significant in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). However, he expressed concern over the situation.

Carvalho further applauded the Portuguese government’s decision to summon the Guinean ambassador in Lisbon for clarifications, aiming to understand and possibly reverse the expulsion decision.

Reiterating the need to comprehend the rationale behind the action, Carvalho voiced firm disapproval from the party led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, emphasizing the close ties between the two countries.

The deputy also described the Guinean government’s stance as disproportionate, stressing the importance of awaiting explanations from the summoned ambassador.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Paulo Rangel, issued a statement condemning the expulsion of Lusa, RTP, and RDP as “highly reprehensible and unjustifiable,” while immediately calling the Guinean ambassador for a meeting on Saturday to seek explanations. Highlighting the importance of these media for both countries’ populations and the Lusophone community, the ministry expressed its intent to counteract the decision.

The Portuguese government, the statement added, is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the administrations of Lusa, RTP, and RDP. In terms of bilateral relations, the ministry deemed the Guinean government’s decision “highly reprehensible and unjustifiable.”

The communication reaffirmed Portugal’s commitment to maintaining the profound friendship between the two nations, prioritizing foreign policy aimed at enhancing the quality of mutual relations, while respecting the sovereignty of both states.

Ricardo Carvalho emphasized the necessity of ensuring the continued operation of these media institutions within Guinea-Bissau, considering their pivotal role for both Portuguese communities and the promotion of Portuguese language. The presence of Lusa, RTP, and RDP in Guinea-Bissau is crucial not only for reporting on local affairs but also for sharing developments from Portugal with the Guinean populace.

Following the ambassador’s explanations, the PSD intends to assess the situation in parliament and subsequently decide on further action within its parliamentary group.
