PSD’s standing committee meets two days after electoral victory

The National Standing Committee will convene at 10:30 a.m. at a hotel in Lisbon, with Leonor Beleza, first vice-president of the party, scheduled to speak to the press afterward.

This body includes the PSD president and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the party’s six vice-presidents, Secretary-General and Parliamentary Leader Hugo Soares, and national municipal coordinator Pedro Alves, who will attend as a guest.

No specific agenda was disclosed for the meeting, which takes place two days after the Sunday municipal elections won by the PSD.

The Social Democrats, either independently or through coalitions, have the highest number of mayors elected, totaling 136, according to preliminary results from the Ministry of Internal Administration, with a majority in 109 municipalities.

Among these, 78 were elected through PSD-only lists and 58 through coalitions (44 with CDS-PP, four with CDS-PP and IL, and ten with other alliances).

In total, the PSD secured nearly 1.9 million votes, accounting for 34.31% of the overall vote.

Additionally, the Social Democrats supported six independent movements that succeeded, including those led by Isaltino Morais in Oeiras and Maria das Dores Meira in Setúbal.

Since the previous municipal elections in 2021, the party has gained 22 more municipal seats (having previously secured 114) and reversed local government leadership, surpassing the PS in both municipalities and parishes. This shift allows them to lead the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) and the National Association of Parishes (Anafre), a goal set by Luís Montenegro.

The PSD, either alone or in coalitions, won the five most populous municipalities in the country—retaining Lisbon and Cascais, regaining Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and Sintra—and also won in the socialist stronghold of Guimarães.

However, compared to four years ago, the PSD lost district capitals (now leading seven, down from nine in 2021). They lost Bragança and Viseu, as well as Coimbra and Faro, which they previously held. Conversely, they won Beja for the first time and regained Porto, keeping Aveiro, Braga, Lisbon, Portalegre, and Santarém.

In the October 10 elections, the PS finished second, winning 126 municipalities independently and two more in coalition with Livre and PAN. Citizen Groups won the presidency of 20 municipalities, and CDU secured 12.

The CDS-PP independently elected six mayors, and Chega won in three municipalities.
