The cold weather has returned to Portugal after what seemed like an endless summer. This week, temperatures could drop to -4ºC in the northern and central interior, prompting the activation of heaters and the retrieval of blankets from storage.
In response, the Public Security Police (PSP) issued a list of safety recommendations particularly aimed at the elderly. During winter, incidents where negligence leads to house fires, causing severe damage and sometimes injuries or fatalities, are not uncommon.
The PSP advises the following precautions:
- “Keep heaters away from furniture, curtains, and other flammable materials;
- Never dry clothes on top of heaters or fireplaces;
- Always turn off heating equipment before going to bed or leaving the house;
- Do not leave candles unattended;
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets;
- Exercise caution when using braziers;
- Never leave home with the stove or water heater on;
- In the event of a fire or emergency, dial 112.”
These precautions are part of community policing efforts, specifically targeting the elderly through the “Support 65 – Seniors in Safety” program, aimed at promoting their protection and safety, the PSP noted.
The statement also emphasized staying alert to criminal activities such as scams or thefts. Common methods include “theft by deceit (distracting the victim)” and “scam by impostor.”
Regarding crime prevention, the PSP advises:
- Never open the door to strangers;
- When leaving, lock the door and close the windows;
- Always use the security chain or speak through the closed door;
- If strangers request a glass of water or access to your bathroom, refuse;
- If they insist on entry, call 112 immediately;
- Be wary of those offering cheap objects, discounts, or prizes;
- Never hand over your bank card or PIN;
- Do not discuss your habits or routines with strangers;
- If you notice suspicious activity in your building or neighborhood, contact the PSP;
- Do not disclose personal information or complete surveys about yourself without verifying their legitimacy and the responsible company;
- Avoid keeping large amounts of money at home and secure valuables in safes.”
The PSP encourages reporting all crimes, either in person at a nearby police station or via emails vi****************@*sp.pt and/or pr*********@*sp.pt.
