PSP arrested 187 people in an operation targeting bicycles and scooters.

Today, the Public Security Police (PSP) issued a statement detailing the results of the “Active Mobility in Safety” operation, reporting a total of 1,530 traffic violations and directly issuing 971 infraction notices.

Among the notices, 22 were related to bicycle operators, 22 to scooter operators, and 925 to other vehicle operators, such as car drivers.

The PSP noted that the most common infractions included driving under the influence of alcohol, using a mobile phone while driving, and ignoring red traffic lights.

For infractions committed by cyclists and similar road users, the PSP highlighted the use of headphones while operating vehicles.

As part of the operation, 278 awareness and inspection activities took place, reaching 6,809 drivers.

The PSP raised awareness among 667 cyclists, 468 scooter operators, 31 drivers of other vehicles (e.g., motor bicycles), and 5,643 car drivers.

On May 28, the operation’s launch day, the PSP reported 623 accidents involving bicycles and scooters in the first four months of the year, with no fatalities but resulting in 16 serious injuries.

PSP data indicated 623 accidents occurred in the initial four months of this year, 479 of which involved victims.

The security force’s data, reflecting their intervention area, suggested an increase in accidents as well as serious and minor injuries over the past five years.

Given the rising trend of road accidents involving bicycles and scooters, the PSP emphasizes the need for compliance with traffic lights and other signals, maintaining proper lane positions on designated paths, and yielding to pedestrians, especially at crossings.

The PSP also warns against driving under the influence of alcohol, the use or manipulation of electronic devices like mobile phones and headphones while driving, the necessity of signaling directional changes in advance, always checking before maneuvers, and the use of helmets, although not mandatory.
