
President of the Republic expressed deep sorrow over the accident involving the Glória Elevator in Lisbon, particularly concerning the fatalities, the severely injured, and the several others with minor injuries.
An official source from the PSP confirmed fatalities but did not disclose numbers.
The fatalities count could possibly be around ten.
The Polícia Judiciária dispatched a Digital Forensic Laboratory team to the scene, following standard procedure for violent death cases.
The Glória Elevator derailed at 6:04 PM on Calçada da Glória in Lisbon.
A half-hour later, in a statement, Lisbon’s Civil Protection Director, Margarida Castro Martins, reported 20 people were involved, with two critically injured, five with minor injuries, and several trapped.
According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, as of 7:30 PM, there were 62 operatives and 22 vehicles present at the site.
Managed by Carris, the Glória Elevator connects Restauradores to São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto over a 265-meter route, popular with tourists.
