PSP detained 306 people for domestic violence in the first half of 2025

The Public Security Police (PSP) reports that provisional figures for the first half of this year show 306 arrests related to domestic violence offenses. Of these, 16 were caught in the act, while 290 were arrested afterward.

The PSP recorded 11,445 reports of domestic violence. Among the identified suspects, 2,725 were women and 9,666 were men. For victims, numbers reached 8,456 women and 4,172 men.

The relationship between suspects and victims predominantly involved offspring/stepchildren (3,734), followed by spouses/partners (3,521) and ex-spouses or ex-partners (1,699).

The authority notes that 54 preventive detention measures were imposed by the judiciary. PSP investigators initiated 10,168 criminal inquiries delegated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in this context, with 3,404 suspects officially charged with domestic violence.

In the first six months of the year, the PSP’s Proximity and Victim Support Teams (EPAV) conducted 11,681 contacts and policing reinforcement actions to protect victims.

Additionally, 4,970 protective measures were implemented in collaboration with other institutions, including shelters, teleassistance, and victim support organizations.

The PSP highlights preventative work done by proximity policing, especially through the Safe School Program, which conducted 1,996 awareness activities for 45,664 students in the 2024/2025 academic year.

The agency conducts annual national operations aimed at preventing and combating domestic violence, such as the “Dating Without Conflict” and “Violence Stays at the Door” campaigns.

The PSP has established Police Service Structures for Domestic Violence Victims (EAPVVD) across the country, staffed by specially trained officers to assist and investigate domestic violence cases.

Social media campaigns and media outreach aim to involve family, friends, and neighbors in reporting suspicious situations. Victims are encouraged to contact the police easily, especially through vi****************@*sp.pt.

Reports can also be made in person at police stations with EPAV officers or at the EAPVVD facilities.
