New data released by the Public Security Police (PSP) today reveals that between January 1 and October 31 of this year, the PSP conducted 20,139 road prevention and inspection operations, stopping 604,529 drivers.
During these operations, the PSP carried out 169,101 alcohol breath tests, identifying 7,986 infractions related to driving under the influence of alcohol. This marks an increase of 1,811 from the same period in 2024, averaging 26 infractions per day.
The PSP reported that these infractions led to the arrest of 4,384 drivers for driving with illegal alcohol levels (over 1.2 grams per liter of blood), which is 1,129 more than in the same period of 2024, and resulted in 3,602 administrative offenses for alcohol-related infractions, 682 more than the previous year.
The PSP stated that the increase in infractions detected represents “a considerable rise” of 29.3% compared to the same period last year, as a result of intensified road prevention and inspection operations nationwide.
The PSP reminds the public that numerous scientific studies have shown that driving under the influence of alcohol causes various impairments, particularly in cognitive functions and information processing, as well as affecting reaction capabilities and motor coordination.
This security force also warns of the heightened risks associated with driving under the influence of alcohol, noting that with a blood alcohol content of 0.5 g/l, the risk of a serious or fatal accident doubles, and accidents resulting from alcohol-influenced driving are particularly severe.
