The parliamentary leader of the Left Bloc (BE) praised the Portuguese Public Security Police (PSP) on Thursday for issuing a negative opinion on the demonstrations planned for April 25 at Martim Moniz in Lisbon.
In a post shared on the social media platform X, Fabian Figueiredo emphasized that “April 25 is for everyone,” and that the groups organizing these gatherings aimed to conduct an “intimidatory action” against immigrants residing in the Santa Maria Maior parish.
“Three extreme-right groups wanted to conduct an intimidatory action at Martim Moniz. The PSP re-evaluated their opinion and rejected the initiative. They did well. April 25 is for everyone, both for those born here and for immigrants. Everyone has the right to tranquility and safety,” stated the Left Bloc parliamentarian.
The PSP justified its stance, already communicated to the Lisbon City Hall, by noting that several gatherings were scheduled “for the same time and geographic area, some with different and antagonistic objectives, aims, and ideological positions,” necessitating the need to “ensure public order and tranquility.”

This development follows the announcement by the party Ergue-te and the Habeas Corpus movement of a demonstration featuring a “pig on a spit” to be held at Martim Moniz on Friday afternoon, a gathering supported by the extreme-right group 1143, led by Mário Machado.
Simultaneously, the traditional April 25 parade will take place on Avenida da Liberdade.
The decision regarding the events at Praça do Martim Moniz now lies with the Lisbon City Hall (CML).
Contacted by Lusa agency on Wednesday, the city administration led by Carlos Moedas indicated that “as always happens in these cases, risk assessment and potential security-related decisions are defined by the PSP,” and it is based “on security forces’ opinions that conditions for holding demonstrations in the city are determined.”
