PSP found nearly 400 elderly people at risk (in two months)

On the occasion of National Senior Citizen Day, the Public Security Police announced the results of the 13th operation “Solidarity Has No Age – PSP with the Elderly”, which occurred from July 28 to September 26 across urban centers nationwide.

During the operation, the PSP conducted 2,824 individual crime prevention contacts, resulting in the identification of 559 elderly individuals, 481 of whom were immediately referred to social support institutions, while 391 were in risky situations.

Among the risk situations, the police highlighted 140 due to lack of autonomy, 67 as victims of repeated crimes, 66 with severe clinical conditions, and 44 lacking a contact network.

This preventative operation, conducted annually since 2012, is primarily carried out by officers from the Community Policing and Victim Support Teams (EPAV) aimed at detecting social fragility, greater physical or mental vulnerability, and suspicions of repetitive victimization among the elderly population.

In addition to year-round awareness activities and individual crime prevention contacts by the EPAV with this population, the PSP intensifies direct contact and dialogue with people over 65 during this operation.

The PSP emphasizes that the operation aims for “early detection of risk indicators, as well as promoting immediate and necessary support through concerted responses with partner entities.”

The PSP also reports that since the start of the year, it has conducted 6,654 individual contacts with the elderly, 3,590 of which were in residences, enabling the identification of 757 seniors due to geographic or social isolation (240), lack of autonomy or reduced autonomy (422), and as victims of repeated crimes (111).
