A 16-year-old individual was injured on Sunday after an officer from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) in Loures, within the Lisbon district, discharged a firearm at a bus. On Monday, the suspect turned himself in to the authorities.
In a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command explained that the incident was reported by the bus driver at approximately 8:25 PM.
“Based on the description of the incident and the suspect’s characteristics and vehicle, the PSP, after several investigative measures, managed to ascertain that the suspect could be an officer, identifying him as an active PSP officer serving at Cometlis,” the statement said.
Authorities further clarified that emergency services were dispatched to the scene where the shooting occurred, and there was a “need to transport a 16-year-old to the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.”
CNN Portugal reported that the suspect turned himself in on Monday. The publication detailed that three shots were fired, and the situation stemmed from a traffic dispute.
The fragments from the shots, fired with a service weapon, reportedly caused severe eye injuries to the minor.
The PSP statement noted that, beyond the usual procedures and preservation of evidence at the scene on Sunday, “the facts established were duly communicated to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Judicial Police, with the investigation subsequently transferred to this Criminal Police Body.”
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command stated that at that time, they “proceeded with the precautionary seizure of the firearm from the officer,” and a disciplinary procedure and proposal for “preventive suspension from duties” were initiated. The Director of National PSP gave immediate approval for this measure.
