PSP records 17 pickpocketing theft crimes per day in the 1st semester

According to the figures released today, the PSP arrested 80 pickpockets from January to June 2025, marking an increase of seven percentage points compared to 2024, when 75 arrests were recorded.

The police also identified 188 suspects involved in pickpocketing, a number lower than the first half of 2024, when the PSP identified 215 suspects.

“Despite the intense effort by the PSP in analyzing, preventing, and responding to this criminal phenomenon,” the PSP noted in the same statement, there were 3,027 incidents recorded in the first half of the year, averaging 17 individuals a day committing this crime.

Compared to the same period in 2024, there was a decrease in incidents, falling from 3,051 occurrences in 2024 to 3,027 in 2025.

According to the PSP, the team formed by officers specialized in crimes against property in 2018 “has significantly increased, over the past few years, the number of suspects caught in the act committing this crime.”

Areas with higher concentrations of people, especially commercial and tourist sites, continue to provide the most favorable conditions for pickpocketing.

In combating this crime, the PSP advises that valuables should be stored in inner pockets, mobile phones or wallets should not be carried visibly or in pockets, and backpacks should preferably be worn at the front of the body rather than on the back.
