PSP reports fewer accidents but more deaths on the roads in July

The Public Security Police (PSP) announced on Wednesday that they arrested 576 drivers for road-related crimes and recorded 18,683 infractions during July. In the same period, the authority reported 4,941 accidents with six fatalities and 68 serious injuries, marking an increase compared to 2024.

In a statement sent to media outlets, the authority emphasized a focus on road infractions and driver behaviors that lead to distractions, which ultimately result in “accidents directly impacting the safety of drivers and other road users.”

Throughout last month, based on provisional data, there were 4,941 accidents in the area under the PSP’s responsibility, resulting in six fatalities, 68 serious injuries, and 1,615 minor injuries. Compared to 2024, there was a “decrease in the number of accidents (-52), minor injuries (-17), and total injuries (-16), but an “increase in serious injuries (+1) and fatalities (+2).”

The six deaths occurred in two pedestrian accidents, two vehicle derailments, and two collisions in the municipalities of Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas, Matosinhos, Seixal, and Ovar.

In total, the PSP monitored 59,273 drivers nationwide and controlled 205,157 vehicles using radar, recording “18,683 offenses, which averages out to about 602 infractions per day.” Compared to the previous year, there was a “13% increase in the number of offenses.”

“Of the infractions recorded during the same period, we highlight 3,721 for speeding, accounting for 20% of the total infractions recorded. In July 2025, the PSP registered 1,506 more drivers speeding than in the same period of 2024, reflecting an increase of about 68%,” explained the PSP.

Throughout the last month, 576 people were arrested for road crimes: 309 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 267 for driving without a legal license. These are 11 more arrests than in the same period of 2024.

In its notice, the PSP urged drivers to drive safely and avoid behaviors that could impair their driving abilities.

Stay informed with the authority’s advice:

  • Do not drive under the influence of alcohol and/or psychotropic substances;
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front;
  • Avoid speeding;
  • Adapt your driving to weather conditions and road status;
  • Do not use a mobile phone while driving;
  • Use passive safety elements (seat belts, restraint systems, helmets);
  • Double-check before starting a maneuver;
  • Avoid sudden maneuvers;
  • Be careful when opening vehicle doors;
  • Signal direction changes in advance and always check before starting a maneuver.

If you are riding a two-wheeled vehicle, the PSP advises:

  • Overtake only when you are sure you have been seen by the other driver, ideally through the other’s left rear mirror;
  • Maintain a safe distance as it allows time to react, slow down, or stop if necessary;
  • Adjust speed not only to avoid fines but also to have more reaction time should a dangerous situation arise.
