Authorities have rescued two Argentine citizens who were lost in the mountains of Madeira Island, the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) reported on Friday.
The operation, carried out by the Mountain Search, Rescue, Aid, and Recovery Brigade of the Public Security Police, in coordination with the Forest Police Corps, took place in the high areas of the São Vicente municipality and lasted approximately two hours.
The tourists, a couple, lost their way on the trail between Levada da Fajã do Rodrigues and Levada do Norte after following a ground marking that led them astray. They quickly realized the difficulty of returning, “complicated by the lack of light, which prompted them to immediately contact the authorities.”
The alert was issued through the Regional Civil Protection Service.
The operation concluded successfully, allowing the safe location and evacuation of the couple to the Ginjas Business Park.
The Public Security Police, which shared the rescue video on social media—viewable in the gallery above—emphasizes the importance of “proper preparation before embarking on mountainous hiking trails, recommending the use of appropriate equipment and prior consultation of official trail information.”
The PSP also highlighted the “responsible attitude of the couple, who, faced with an unexpected dangerous situation, promptly sought assistance, contributing decisively to their own safety.”
