The PSP is carrying out awareness-raising activities with students who are going on senior trips, warning them about excessive alcohol and drug consumption during those trips, the security force said today.
In a statement sent to Lusa, the Public Security Police said that the “Senior Trips” operation will run until March 22 throughout the country, at a time when students from the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education are going on senior trips, with Spain being one of the most frequent destinations.
The PSP justifies this operation on the grounds that there have been a number of incidents on these journeys, generally “linked to the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and narcotics”.
In this sense, she argues, “it is essential to strengthen awareness-raising actions as a way of preventing addictive and risky behavior associated with senior trips, and to contribute to better knowledge among young people of this age about the dangers associated with such consumption.”
The PSP says that the awareness-raising actions will be carried out by the police officers assigned to the Safe School Program and, as an example, it mentioned that an awareness-raising action has already taken place in Guarda, in partnership with the Spanish National Police, to alert students to the risks associated with excessive consumption on these trips, as well as providing some prevention and safety advice.
The police recall the National Plan for the Reduction of Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies for the period 2021 to 2030, which registers an increase in the consumption of alcoholic beverages among young people between the ages of 13 and 18, as well as the consumption of cannabis among young people, in addition to ecstasy and amphetamines.
The PSP advises all students who are going on their final year to keep in regular contact with their families during the vacation period, to have fun without committing excesses, to travel in groups and not to lose sight of their drink when they go to nightclubs or any other place with a large crowd of people.
“Do not accept any kind of substance from strangers, carry your identification documents and European health card, preserve the facilities of the hotels where you are staying and respect the local authorities” are other tips from the police.
