Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party (PT) today called on the Brazilian community in Portugal to vote for left-wing parties, considering that they have consolidated projects in the fight for democracy, social justice and good bilateral relations.
In a letter addressed to the Brazilian community in Portugal, signed by the PT’s International Relations Secretary, Romênio Pereira, the party appeals to its “fellow citizens to support and vote for the forces of the left and progressives, who have historical and consolidated projects in the struggle for democracy, social justice and good relations between our countries”.
The PT said it was following the electoral process underway in Portugal, where in 2022 Lula da Silva won the presidential elections with 64% of the valid votes, and expressed solidarity with the allied and partner parties with which it maintains official relations: PS, PCP, PEV and BE.
“This is the time to mobilize in favor of candidates who represent the democratic, progressive and left-wing camp, those who care about the Brazilian community, who defend more rights and progress, who deserve to be supported and defended,” the missive says.
According to the now-defunct Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) – now the Agency for Migration Integration and Asylum (AIMA) – in September 2023 almost 400,000 Brazilians were living legally in Portugal and represented around 40% of the foreign population.
“To those who can fully exercise their political and citizenship rights in Portugal, it is important to pay special attention to March 10, the date of the elections for the Assembly of the Republic, from which a new government will emerge, one month before the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution,” said Lula da Silva’s party.
More than 10.8 million Portuguese are expected to vote on Sunday to elect 230 deputies to the Portuguese Parliament.
Eighteen political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are running in these elections.
