Two people died on Saturday following a car crash in Beja while traveling on the Itinerário Principal 8. They were the only occupants of the vehicle.
The victims, both Portuguese nationals, are a 53-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman, as explained by a source from the Guarda Nacional Republicana to Lusa.
The alert was given at 11 a.m. with the accident occurring in the area of Nossa Senhora das Neves. A source from the Beja Volunteer Firefighters told Notícias ao Minuto that a helicopter was initially activated but was later stood down.
An hour after the incident, the victims were still trapped inside the vehicle. Traffic remained closed in both directions until around noon.
According to the Civil Protection website, 24 personnel supported by nine vehicles were dispatched to the scene.
Among those deployed was a team from the GNR’s Traffic Accident Investigation Unit (NICAV), who are still working to determine the cause of the crash.
