The QuebraJazz Arts Festival, taking place this summer in Coimbra, will feature a concert by pianists Pedro Burmester and Mário Laginha on themes that marked the revolutionary period.

Mário Laginha and Pedro Burmester will be present at the 15th edition of the festival, with “Celebrar a Liberdade”, a concert in which the two pianists will perform themes that marked the revolutionary period of April 25, by authors such as José Afonso, Sérgio Godinho, Fausto or José Mário Branco, the event’s organizers said today in a press release sent to the Lusa news agency.

The QuebraJazz Arts Festival will run from July 17 to August 31, divided into two stages, which also represent the two festivals that were held separately (Arts Festival and QuebraJazz) before 2021.

Firstly, from July 17 to 24, the main stage will be the Colina de Camões amphitheatre in the gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas, and secondly on the steps of the Quebra Costas and other locations in the city until August 31.

On Camões Hill, in addition to the concert by Burmester and Laginha, there will be a show entitled “The Voice of Camões”, in an original production that brings together the Portuguese guitar of Marta Pereira da Costa, “the only woman to play this instrument professionally”, and actor António Fonseca, who will recite excerpts from Os Lusíadas.

A concert co-produced with the University of Coimbra is also planned for the venue, bringing together the Gulbenkian Orchestra and pianist Artur Pizarro, under the musical direction of José Eduardo Gomes.

Under the theme “Messengers”, this year’s edition of the festival will feature several concerts, as well as a vast complementary program ranging from gastronomy, conference cycles and educational services.

According to the press release, the musical program for the 15th edition will be announced in full very soon.

The QuebraJazz Arts Festival is the result of a partnership between the Inês de Castro Foundation and QuebraJazz (Quebra Costas Cultural Association).
