Queer Porto 11: Film The Nature of Invisible Things wins Best Film

The film, centered on an unlikely friendship formed when two young women meet in a hospital, is a 2023 co-production between Brazil and Chile, directed by Brazilian Rafaela Camelo.

The jury, consisting of RTP producer and director Adriano Nazareth, artist Aura, and producer and filmmaker Catarina de Sousa, awarded a special mention to Mea Culpa by Patrick Tass (Belgium), which explores themes of identity, family, and sexuality.

According to the organization, the audience award went to Queer as Punk by Yihwen Chen (Malaysia, Indonesia), a Malaysian director and journalist. The film documents the journey of an openly queer punk band in Malaysia, a country where LGBTQ+ rights are denied.

The Casa Comum Award for the best Portuguese short film was given to ‘O Cemitério de Insetos’ by Alex Simões.

This award’s jury, appointed by the Rectory of the University of Porto, included Anabela Santos, culture communication advisor for the University of Porto, Jorge Peixoto Freitas, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, and Telmo Fernandes, researcher in sociology and psychology.

The festival concluded tonight with the national premiere of the British film Hot Milk by Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

The 11th Queer Porto showcased a total of 40 films, divided into 27 cinema sessions over five days. The sessions and discussions with guests took place at Batalha Centro de Cinema, Casa Comum (University of Porto Rectory), and Passos Manuel.

According to the organization, the official festival page has confirmed the dates for Queer Lisboa 30, a special edition of the festival, set to take place from September 18 to 26, 2026, at Cinema São Jorge and the Portuguese Cinematheque. Queer Porto will return in 2026, with dates to be announced.
