Rain or showers, sometimes intense and accompanied by thunderstorms, are forecasted until Saturday, with a particular emphasis on Friday, as explained by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). The depression is expected to position itself to the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the end of today, gradually moving northward.
“This depression is associated with a cold frontal surface and various instability lines that will affect the weather in mainland Portugal,” the IPMA stated in a communiqué.
A south quadrant wind, ranging from weak to moderate, is also expected to intensify to moderate to strong along the coast and in the highlands, with gusts reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour (km/h) starting late today. Snowfall is predicted in the higher points of Serra da Estrela, along with strong maritime agitation.
This weather condition has prompted the IPMA to issue a yellow warning for strong south/southeast winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h, especially along the coast. This alert is valid for the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, and Coimbra from 9:00 PM today until 3:00 PM on Friday.
The IPMA also placed all 18 districts of the mainland under a warning from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Friday due to the potential for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
The districts of Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, and Beja are under alert between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM today, and Faro is until 9:00 PM on Friday because of the forecast for strong maritime agitation with southwest waves ranging from 4 to 4.5 meters.
The Madeira archipelago will also be affected by the passage of depression Núria, with a yellow warning for wind gusts that can reach 120 km/h in mountainous regions until midnight on Friday.
The remaining areas of the archipelago are under a yellow warning until 6:00 AM on Friday, mainly due to precipitation, wind, and maritime agitation.
A yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued whenever there is a risk situation affecting certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
