A ladder snake was captured in José Afonso Park, located in Baixa da Banheira in the municipality of Moita, on Saturday. Later that day, volunteers from the Moita Fire Department successfully returned the animal to its natural habitat.
“The operation was conducted safely and effectively, posing no risk to the public,” the rescuers reported on Facebook.
The department further clarified that this species is not dangerous to humans.
“The ladder snake is naturally shy, avoids contact with people, and plays a crucial role in controlling rodents and other small animals,” they added.
The firefighters noted that “its venom is very weak and serves only to aid in digesting prey such as small rodents or lizards,” adding that there have been “no records of serious incidents involving this species in Portugal.”
The rescuers then returned the snake to its natural habitat, and images of this can be viewed in the gallery above.
“If you see a snake, the most important thing is to stay calm and not attempt to capture it. Always contact the appropriate authorities,” they advised.
