In Lousada, in the Porto district, during the presentation of the socialist candidate for the Municipal Chamber, the PS secretary-general recalled that when Brexit occurred in the United Kingdom, a “cross-ministry team coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs” was created, a dynamic he wishes to see adopted by the current government.
“It is very important that the Ministry of Economy meets as soon as possible with representatives of these sectors to find mitigation measures and special supports for these sectors,” he stated, referring to various sectors, specifically textiles and clothing, footwear, and wines.
Stating that “the impacts of the US tariff policy will be felt throughout the European Union and also in Portugal,” José Luís Carneiro noted, “there was already a forecast that, with rates of 10%, Europe by 2025 could face a decline in its wealth of about 30%” and that “it was estimated for 2026 that the loss of European income could reach about 50%.”
“This means that with rates of 30%, the impacts will be very significant. It is very important that the government has thought-out and structured responses to address these impacts, a real shock to our economy,” he said.
José Luís Carneiro recalled that “for several months,” there has been talk from the US of the possibility of adopting tariffs, which is why he wants to believe that “the government will have solutions and measures that mitigate their effects.”
The PS secretary-general spoke to journalists on the sidelines of the presentation of Nelson Oliveira’s candidacy for the Lousada Chamber, where he promised: “As PS secretary-general, and if I ever become prime minister, you can count on an integrated vision for the Baixo Tâmega territory.”
Regarding Lousada, he made three demands to the current executive of Luís Montenegro, asking for them to “fulfill simple objectives that are even easy to achieve.”
“That the Land Registry Office of Lousada, once and for all, is open every day of the week and has staff to respond to our population. That the government fulfills the protocol I signed to rehabilitate the GNR post. And put at the service of the people of Lousada the 45 apartments listed in the protocol established between the government, the Housing Institute, and the Municipal Chamber,” he enumerated.
In a well-attended candidacy presentation session in which all candidates for the Chamber, the Municipal Assembly, and Parish Councils were presented, José Luís Carneiro began by stating that he is “an adamant advocate of Territorial Development Pacts,” so he will fight for the fulfillment of an integrated investment strategy with the municipalities of Baixo Tâmega in parliament, in the European Parliament, and with all the mayors of the region.
“The obstacles that still today condition our economic growth, that limit the growth of our salaries, and that limit opportunities for our youth, must be combated,” he stated.
