The recognition of the State of Palestine signifies an affirmation that peace will only be possible with two viable, recognized, and secure states coexisting side by side, reiterated the Socialist leader.
For António José Seguro, this move is also an affirmation of respect for international law, human dignity, and peace.
The presidential candidate highlighted the necessity for Portugal to support a political solution that allows for lasting peace, based on dialogue and peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.
The Socialist had previously expressed his views on this matter in a Facebook post on August 1, where he stated that recognition is not, nor should it be, a gesture against Israel.
Portugal formally recognized the State of Palestine today, as announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.
“Today, September 21, 2025, the Portuguese State officially recognizes the State of Palestine,” declared the Portuguese diplomat during a statement at the Portuguese mission to the United Nations in New York.
Portugal joined the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, who also communicated this decision earlier in the afternoon, becoming the 13th European Union country to recognize the Palestinian state.
