Reconquista Frazão “does not recognize himself.” “I even send a video of health improvements”

Pedro Frazão, vice-president of the Chega party, declared on Monday his disassociation from all ideas of the supremacist group Reconquista, to whom he had sent a message of support, which was broadcast at the movement’s third Congress on Saturday. The parliamentarian downplayed his remarks, noting that he sends “videos for birthdays, dinners, and events,” as well as “get well soon” messages to various individuals.

“Obviously, I do not see myself, and I have no qualms in saying it, because in terms of women’s rights and bringing women into politics, Chega is at the forefront,” Frazão told CNN Portugal. This statement comes as the movement explicitly opposes immigrants in Portugal and contests the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community.

The deputy acknowledged he was requested “a greeting video for an event of youth with civic participation,” emphasizing that he does “not agree with everything that is there.”

“I did it personally; I sent a video for a gathering, as I do hundreds of times. I send videos for birthdays, dinners, events, and to people who ask me… I even send ‘get well soon’ videos to various people, and I was asked for a greeting video for a youth event with civic participation. Does that mean I agree with everything there? No, of course not,” he stated.

The vice-president of Chega, Pedro Frazão, sent a message of support to the supremacist group Reconquista, which was broadcast at the movement’s third Congress on Saturday. In the footage, the deputy asserted that the party led by André Ventura is an “ally” of the group.

He added: “As far as I know, it is a movement that has gathered legally for some years, and therefore, if it indeed has such an illegal nature, I don’t understand why the authorities have not acted.”

Chega’s president, André Ventura, admitted there are “points of convergence” with Reconquista, particularly concerning immigration, but distanced himself from other ideas, including the inferiority of women to men, which he called an “absolute nonsense.”

“Deputy Pedro Frazão sent a greeting video to a movement, as he does for hundreds of other movements, and he was not present as vice-president of Chega, he did not send it as vice-president of Chega, he sent it personally,” he reiterated.

Ventura emphasized that “Chega’s only ally is the Portuguese people,” while also asserting that “Chega firmly defends a country with less immigration, the country’s values, the Christian value system, equality between men and women, which is a decisive and fundamental point, the fight against corruption, and the expulsion of illegal immigrants.”

However, Pedro Frazão praised the supremacist group as “one of the houses of patriotic Christian right in Portugal,” and admitted that “the Chega party, with allies like [Reconquista], is here to remind everyone that the defense of Portugal also involves the defense of our culture, our families, and our Portuguese Christian identity.”

Notícias ao Minuto contacted Chega regarding the intervention, but no response has been received yet.
