A fisherman has died after reportedly diving while engaged in spearfishing, according to the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
The victim was retrieved from the water and transported to the Velas port, where the death was officially certified by the Health Delegate.
The alert about the incident was received by the Public Security Police (PSP) around 3:50 PM local time (4:50 PM mainland time) on Sunday. “Elements from the Horta Maritime Police Command and Velas Volunteer Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene,” authorities reported.
Following contact with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the body was moved to the Calheta health center morgue by firefighters.
