The organization highlighted the severe impact of the earthquake that struck on Friday, leaving hundreds missing and trapped under debris, causing significant damage to roads, bridges, airports, and communication systems.
Currently, the Myanmar Red Cross has mobilized over 7,000 personnel to support affected communities, comprising 6,432 volunteers and 587 professionals, with logistical coordination from 274 regional branches nationwide.
On the ground, these Red Cross teams are assisting search and rescue operations to locate survivors among the rubble and are distributing emergency shelters, blankets, tarps, and hygiene kits, it was explained.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck on Friday, resulting in fatalities and the collapse of numerous buildings and historical monuments in Myanmar, Southeast Asia.
The earthquake was recorded at 06:20 (Lisbon time). It struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter approximately 17 km from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of 1.2 million, and 270 km north of the capital, Naypyidaw.
The military junta, which has been in power since the 2021 coup, reported the earthquake’s toll at 1,644 dead, 3,408 injured, and 139 missing, according to information broadcasted through the official channel MRTV.
