Regina Duarte presents her first painting exhibition in May in Portugal.

The Luka Art Gallery, located at the Palácio Biester, announced that Regina Duarte is set to inaugurate the exhibition titled “Fases e Faces”, showcasing paintings created over more than forty years, “behind the scenes of her own life”.

The press release states, “Art transcends censorships, ideologies, and divisions of opinion and demonstrates in this exhibition the true essence of respect and recognition of an artist.”

The exhibition is curated by Ana Carolina de Villanueva, who is in charge of the Luka Art Gallery.

Regina Duarte, aged 78, is one of Brazil’s most renowned television actresses, notably for her roles in telenovelas such as “Roque Santeiro”, “Rainha da Sucata”, and “Histórias de Amor” on the TV Globo network. She left the network in 2020 to head the Special Secretariat for Culture during Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency.

Duarte, who had previously minimized censorship and torture during Brazil’s military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985, faced heavy criticism from the artistic community and remained in the cultural office for only two months. She was then appointed to lead the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo, but she never assumed the position.

Last week, in an interview on TV Globo, Regina Duarte stated that she was “ousted” by public opinion due to her support for and involvement in Jair Bolsonaro’s government.

Previously, Regina Duarte publicly supported the electoral campaigns of Presidents Fernando Collor (1990-1992) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002), who defeated leftist leader Lula da Silva. In 2002, she also supported the conservative candidate José Serra.

Brazilian media reports indicate that Regina Duarte has primarily invested in the visual arts, having launched an official website to promote and sell her artwork, including oil, pastel, and pencil paintings, botanical collages, and other items.

Her official page notes that since 2023, Regina Duarte has been dedicated to “plastic/botanic arts”, although her “first oil on canvas was, in 1974, an enlarged copy of a family photo”.
