The Secretary-General of the PSD was in Bragança today at the launch of the candidacy of the current Mayor, Paulo Xavier, for the upcoming October elections. During the event, the mayor expressed his ambition to transform the local aerodrome into a regional airport.
The Secretary-General indicated that it is necessary to “study,” “analyze,” and understand the “conditions” under which such a project can be undertaken. “If it is possible to do, the Government should promote everything it can to make it happen,” he stated.
However, recognizing it as a “very expensive” project that “involves various dynamics,” Hugo Soares emphasized that it needs to be approached “responsibly” so as not to “jeopardize everything else that needs to be done for Trás-os-Montes.”
Hugo Soares acknowledged the project as “very interesting” for Bragança, a long-standing demand, and one that would be “very important for the development of Trás-os-Montes.”
Therefore, he assured they would consider “with great care and respect the creation of the airport,” stressing that the Government “always desires to combat desertification and promote territorial cohesion.”
According to the Bragança aerodrome’s master plan updated in May of last year, the project will cost nearly 40 million euros, will be conducted in eight phases, and is expected to take 10 years to complete.
