The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) announced on Friday the arrest of a 46-year-old man in a village near Penafiel, who was wanted in Brazil for child molestation.
“The Polícia Judiciária, through the Northern Directorate, detained a foreign citizen, under an international arrest warrant issued by INTERPOL at the request of the judicial authorities in Brazil, for serving an 18-year prison sentence for the crime of child molestation,” the statement read.
According to the PJ, the arrest took place “yesterday in a village near Penafiel, where the individual had been living for about two years and was fully integrated, even being a leader in a religious community in another municipality.”
The note further stated that the detained individual had been evading justice for about two years, avoiding the prison sentence to which he was condemned.
The man will be brought before the Tribunal da Relação do Porto for the imposition of extradition to Brazil.
