The REN identifies this infrastructure as “strategic” for strengthening the National Transmission Network (RNT) and ensuring the secure integration of electricity production from renewable energy sources into the National Electric System.
This line is part of the 400 kV axis that connects various plants to the RNT, including the hydroelectric plants of Gouvães, Daivões, and Alto Tâmega (Tâmega Electricity Production System). It also facilitates the transmission from other renewable plants in the Minho and Trás-os-Montes regions.
The line spans a distance of 93 kilometers (km), involving the installation of 256 new support structures and the clearance of an easement strip covering 383 hectares, affecting 1,767 property owners.
In 2025, during the period from January to August, renewable production accounted for 71% of electricity consumption in mainland Portugal, distributed among hydroelectric with 30%, wind with 24%, photovoltaic solar with 12%, and biomass with 5%.
On April 28, Portugal and Spain experienced a blackout that affected millions of people.
