Renewable targets for industry and transport will start this year.

The decree-law approved by the Council of Ministers on May 29 and published today in the official government journal sets 2030 targets of a minimum 16% renewable energy share in the industry and 29% in the transport sector.

These goals remain in effect until European Union directives on promoting the use of energy from renewable sources are transposed into national law.

“The industry and transport sectors, due to their significance in energy consumption and added challenges in decarbonization, particularly through electrification, should be central players in the energy transition. In this context, the RP-C21-r46 reform: regulatory framework for renewable hydrogen, included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), lays the foundation for decarbonization through the development of the renewable hydrogen value chain,” the published document states.

According to the document, the decree-law takes effect six months from its publication date, a timeframe the government deems “reasonable” for implementation.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, had promulgated this legislation on Monday, emphasizing that it fulfills one of the structural reforms outlined in the RRP under the new regulatory framework for renewable hydrogen.
