Reopening to the public of Cais do Ginjal in Almada scheduled for July 31

The Mayor of Almada, located in the Setúbal district, announced on her Facebook page today that she visited the ongoing construction works in the area. This visit was at the invitation of the AFA Group, the buildings’ owner and the project executor.

With demolitions completed, the mayor mentioned that conditions are now being ensured “to restore life, safety, and dynamism” to one of the city’s most cherished and sought-after areas.

Inês de Medeiros added that the reopening of the Cais do Ginjal to the public is scheduled for the 31st.

Throughout the site, an exhibition on the history of this iconic area of Almada’s history will be available.

“This will be a new chapter for Almada, where past and future meet, and Almada residents and visitors alike will again enjoy our wonderful Tejo river,” the mayor stated.

Demolitions in Ginjal by the AFA Group, the owner of the buildings identified as being at risk, began on May 5th.

The group noted that the demolitions followed a technical assessment prompted by inspections carried out by the Municipal Civil Protection Service.

On April 3rd, the Almada City Council declared a “state of alert” under the Civil Protection Basic Law to prohibit pedestrian access to Cais do Ginjal from near the Cacilhas ferry terminal to the eateries at Olho-de-boi.

The “state of alert” remained in place until May 1st and was not renewed.

The Almada City Council notified the property owners and the Lisbon Port Administration (APL) to carry out works and submitted a concrete proposal to the Government seeking a solution for the site’s rehabilitation.

In November 2020, the Almada City Council unanimously approved the Ginjal Quay Detailed Plan for comprehensive intervention and rehabilitation of the area, in a joint project with the AFA Group.

The group estimates a 300 million euro investment for around 90,000 square meters, planning a residential complex with approximately 300 homes, multiple commercial and service units, a hotel with 160 rooms, social facilities, and 500 parking spaces.
