Repeat offender detained and remanded in custody in Montemor-o-Novo

A 65-year-old man has been arrested and placed in preventive detention on suspicion of repeated domestic violence against his former partner in Montemor-o-Novo, Évora district, as announced by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP).

The MP noted in a statement published on the website of the Regional Attorney General’s Office of Évora, accessed today by Lusa agency, that the suspect has been under investigation for several months and has been subject to coercive measures since February 5 of this year.

The man was prohibited from contacting the victim by any means, monitored remotely, and banned from staying or approaching the residence and workplace of his ex-partner.

At that time, the accused was also obliged to undergo counseling and treatment for alcohol dependency.

The MP stated that, at least since May and until the 17th of this month, the man “violated the prohibitions and resumed harassing” the 53-year-old ex-partner.

This time, he used “third parties to continue stalking her, monitoring her daily movements” and expressed “the intention to kill her,” it noted.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that the suspect was now detained following the issuance of arrest warrants outside of an in flagrante delicto situation and, after being presented on Friday for a judicial inquiry, he was placed in preventive detention.

“After the inquiry and the evident risks of continuing criminal activity and disrupting the investigation were recognized again, the MP promoted the application of the preventive detention measure, which was endorsed by the criminal investigation judge,” it stated.

The investigations continue under the direction of the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) of Montemor-o-Novo with the assistance of the GNR.
