Representative of the Republic for Madeira meets parties on Friday

After the completion of the election for the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, judge counselor Ireneu Cabral Barreto, in accordance with articles 231, paragraph 3 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, and 57, paragraph 1 of the Political-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, will proceed with consultations with political parties next Friday, March 28, at the Palácio de São Lourenço.

After listening to the parties, it is expected that the judge counselor will call Miguel Albuquerque, the leader of the most voted party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), to form the next Regional Government.

Information provided by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration indicates that the Social Democrats secured 43.43% of the votes (62,085 votes) and 23 seats in the Regional Legislative Assembly, which is comprised of a total of 47 deputies.

Miguel Albuquerque’s party emerged strengthened from the early regional elections. Marcelo interpreted the victory as an “absolute majority” and believes the choice by the Madeirans ensures “stability.” On the mainland, Montenegro expressed satisfaction with the “extraordinary victory,” while Pedro Nuno distanced himself from the “defeat of the Madeira PS.” Keep up with the election results and all the reactions.

The JPP achieved 21.05% of the votes (30,094 votes) and secured 11 seats in the regional parliament, while the PS received 15.64% (22,355 votes) and eight seats in the Regional Legislative Assembly, followed by Chega, which elected three deputies, and IL and CDS-PP, each obtaining one seat.

The single electoral constituency of the archipelago, with 47 parliamentary seats, saw 14 lists vying for representation: CDU (PCP/PEV), PSD, Livre, JPP, Nova Direita, PAN, Força Madeira (PTP/MPT/RIR), PS, IL, PPM, BE, Chega, ADN, and CDS-PP.

The Madeira Legislative Assembly will thus be composed of 23 deputies from the PSD (just one shy of an absolute majority), 11 from JPP, eight from PS, three from Chega, and one each from CDS-PP and IL.
