Representative of the Republic in Madeira hears parties on Sunday

After consulting with the political parties, it is anticipated that the leader of the most voted party (PSD), Miguel Albuquerque, will be invited to form the next Regional Government.

Ireneu Barreto begins by meeting at 9:30 AM with the PSD, which elected 23 deputies, just one short of an absolute majority. This is followed by the JPP, with 11 elected, the PS with eight, and Chega, which elected three parliamentarians.

At 12:30 PM, the CDS-PP, which elected one deputy and signed a governance and parliamentary agreement with the Social Democrats on Tuesday, securing the absolute majority, will be heard. Finally, the Liberal Initiative, which secured one seat in the Legislative Assembly, will participate.

At the conclusion of these meetings, Ireneu Barreto will make a statement open to questions from the media, according to information released by his office.

On Tuesday, two days post-elections, the regional structures of the PSD and CDS-PP established a post-electoral agreement ensuring a parliamentary majority in the region, including the integration of the archipelago’s Christian-Democrat leader, José Manuel Rodrigues, into the executive.

Miguel Albuquerque, the president of the executive since 2015, announced that José Manuel Rodrigues, who currently presides over the Regional Legislative Assembly, will join the new executive, though he did not disclose the specific portfolio he would handle.

These elections marked the third legislative session held in Madeira within approximately a year and a half, with 14 lists competing from a single district: CDU (PCP/PEV), PSD, Livre, JPP, New Right, PAN, Força Madeira (PTP/MPT/RIR), PS, IL, PPM, BE, Chega, ADN, and CDS-PP.

The elections took place 10 months after the previous ones due to a vote of no confidence moved by Chega, justified by judicial investigations involving members of the Regional Government, including the president, Miguel Albuquerque (PSD), and the subsequent dissolution of the Legislative Assembly by the President of the Republic.

The prior regional elections occurred on May 26, 2024, where the PSD elected 19 deputies, PS 11, JPP nine, Chega four (one deputy later became independent) and CDS-PP two. Both PAN and IL managed to secure one seat each.

At that time, the PSD formed a parliamentary agreement with CDS-PP, which was still insufficient for an absolute majority. The Social Democrats also established a parliamentary agreement with PAN following the regional elections in September 2023.
