Representative of the Republic in Madeira says “beacon of hope” has died.

Pope Francis, throughout his papacy, was a beacon of hope and renewal for all, including for some segments of society that had been forgotten, emphasized a judicial advisor in his condolence message to the Bishop of Funchal, Nuno Brás.

Expressing his condolences, the representative also expressed solidarity with those from Madeira, who are affiliated with the Catholic Church and are mourning a good man who will be greatly missed.

Pope Francis passed away today, concluding a 12-year pontificate marked by efforts against sexual abuse, conflicts, and a pandemic. Born in Buenos Aires, on December 17, 1936, Francis was the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church.

Francis had been hospitalized for 38 days due to bilateral pneumonia and was discharged on March 23. His last public appearance was on Easter Sunday at the Vatican, on the eve of his passing.

The Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, who is on vacation in Madeira, speaking from the presidency of the Regional Government of Madeira, announced a proposal to the President of the Republic to declare three days of national mourning for the Pope’s death.

The Diocese of Funchal in Madeira also reacted with “profound sadness” to the news of Francis’s death.
