“A Republic is more than a political regime. The Republic is a commitment to a dignified life for all, in freedom, with equality and social justice,” stated Seguro in a message sent to newsrooms on the occasion of the celebration of October 5th, which marks the establishment of the Republic in 1910.
The presidential candidate expressed his view that the Republic “is not fulfilled while emergency rooms remain closed, unacceptable delays in accessing consultations and surgeries persist, rents and housing prices are unaffordable, and justice is slow and often expires,” he said.
Also, “as long as insecurity, poverty, low wages, wage inequality between women and men, and young people emigrating because they do not find the future they desire in Portugal persist,” he added.
For Seguro, respect for the Constitution of the Republic is not just about ensuring “nothing is done against it,” but in guaranteeing that it “is fulfilled, and by fulfilling it, the country progresses and the Portuguese live better,” he stated.
“On this October 5th, I call upon the unity of the Portuguese around Portugal, our common ground, the space that allows us to live in peace, meet our needs, and exercise our freedoms,” he urged.
The former PS leader stressed that hatred should not be allowed to divide people.
“It is time for us to truly unite, not against someone, but for Portugal, for a more just, freer, and more dignified future,” he appealed.
Seguro hopes this date will serve as inspiration to continue “working for a fairer and excellent country”.
“When we unite, no crisis is greater than our willingness to change with concrete solutions,” he said.
The ceremony marking the official celebrations of the Day of the Republic’s Establishment, which takes place this morning in Praça do Município, Lisbon, will not have speeches and will be limited to institutional guests, as it coincides with the election campaign for the municipal elections on October 12th.
