Restoration of normal traffic in the Grilo Tunnel begins Monday.

The Infrastructure of Portugal (IP) has announced changes in tunnel operations starting Monday, with full traffic circulation restored in the four lanes of the gallery from Sacavém to Algés. On April 29, the opposite direction will also see a restoration of normal flow.

IP clarified that these changes would apply during peak traffic hours between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Overnight, final paving, signage, equipment connections, and tests will be conducted. This requires the closure of one or two lanes in each direction from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The organization anticipates completing all internal gallery work by the first week of May, removing all traffic restrictions in the Grilo Tunnel and its access points.

In July, IP announced a nine-month traffic restriction period for the rehabilitation and modernization of the Grilo Tunnel, with an investment of 14 million euros.

The project includes improving the drainage system, updating the pavement, and replacing the lighting, ventilation, and fire protection systems.

The tunnel now features systems for detecting hazardous materials, speed control (radars), vehicle counting and classification, and video monitoring.

Opened in 1998, the Grilo Tunnel is located on the Olival Basto/Sacavém stretch of the IC17/CRIL, handling an average daily traffic of over 115,000 vehicles.
