Retirement age rises in 2027. Find out how long you will have to work.

The retirement age in Portugal is set to rise to 66 years and 11 months by 2027, according to data related to life expectancy released on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In practical terms, this adjustment signifies an increase of two months from the retirement age planned for 2026, which is 66 years and nine months, as stated in a regulation already published in the Diário da República.

According to INE, “during the 2023-2025 triennium, the provisional value of life expectancy at 65 years was estimated at 20.19 years, marking an increase of 0.17 years compared to the 2022-2024 triennium.”

INE reports that “in the 2023-2025 triennium, the growth trend of life expectancy at 65 years continued, a pattern which resumed in the 2021-2023 triennium, after a decrease recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic years (-0.24 and -0.01 years in 2019-2021 and 2020-2022, respectively), where it declined to values lower than those estimated for 2017-2019 (19.73 years).”

Life expectancy at 65 represents “the average number of additional years a person can expect to live after reaching the exact age of 65, assuming the mortality rates at different ages remain constant,” according to the INE.
