Upon arrival for a lunch with PS founders at the parliament, José Luís Carneiro was questioned about a potential constitutional revision. He emphasized that “there are other priorities in the country” while acknowledging that such a decision “does not depend on the PS’s will.”
“Should the constitutional revision initiative proceed, the Socialist Party, in my view, as I conveyed to the National Commission, must set conditions. One condition is that the AD government establishes the Socialist Party as its dialogue partner, particularly on regime issues,” Carneiro asserted.
The socialist noted that “it is unthinkable to use paths that might jeopardize this historic commitment, spanning over 50 years, which was foundational for the country’s freedoms, rights, and fundamental guarantees.”
José Luís Carneiro reminded that Portugal’s constitutional and democratic commitments “are over 50 years old.”
“In other words, these were commitments established between the Socialist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the Christian democrats. Commitments also laid down in the construction of the European project. When we talk about the Constitution, we are referring to this foundational commitment to rights and fundamental freedoms,” he emphasized.
For the PS leadership candidate, “it is for these values” that the struggle must continue.
“And the dialogue between the two main parties is essential to honor and dignify all those who fought for our current position,” he pointed out.
