The Madeira Regional Command of the PSP seized around a hundred items, including jewelry, bells, and collector coins, on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the city of Santa Cruz after the police patrol was dispatched to an attempted residential burglary in the Caniço area, the authority reports in a statement. After patrolling nearby streets, they managed to locate two suspects, a 47-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man.
Upon the police interception, the suspects were found in possession of several items, including:
- 32 earrings;
- 30 rings, nine of which were gold-colored with stones;
- 13 wristwatches of various brands;
- 12 necklaces;
- Eight brooches and women’s pins in various colors and with stones;
- Six bracelets;
- Two gold-colored bells;
- A piece of jewelry shaped like the Barcelos Rooster, in gold color;
- A tie pin;
- Various collector coins, including: ‘Battle of Ourique 1139-1140’, ‘Namban Art 1543-1639’, ‘Columbus and Portugal’, ‘Elizabeth II’, and ‘Treaty of Tordesillas’.
Although none of these items belonged to the residence targeted in the attempted burglary, the man and woman could not explain their origin when questioned.
“Due to strong suspicions of theft, the items were seized, and an investigation is underway to identify their rightful owners,” the statement adds.
The Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police also released images of the items and requests citizens to contact the PSP for proof of ownership if they recognize any of the objects.
