Rises to 116 the number of people assisted after contamination in Nazaré

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region announced on Sunday that the number of people treated for nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, due to water contamination at Nazaré beach, has risen to a total of 116 cases.

The information provided up to 2:00 PM indicates that, of the 116 cases, 72 are children and adolescents, while the remaining 44 are adults.

The ULS of the Leiria Region also notes that there are more women presenting symptoms (60%) compared to men (40%).

“The Public Health Unit of ULSRL continues clinical follow-up of the identified cases, with ongoing epidemiological investigations and continuous monitoring of the situation,” the statement reads.

On Friday, Nazaré beach was closed following a technical failure that caused discharge into the storm drains and bad odors.

“As a precaution, and until the results of the water quality analyses are received, the beach is closed to bathing by decision of the competent authorities,” the municipality stated in a press release.

By Saturday evening, the Municipality of Nazaré reported that after an afternoon inspection, “it was possible to ascertain that the seawater is currently clear and transparent, without signs of macroscopic organic constituents.”

Quoted in the municipality’s release, the Regional Health Delegation of the Center stated that, given the water analysis results from Friday and the “downward trend” of healthcare use by “patients with gastrointestinal symptoms,” the bathing ban at the beach was lifted.

The bathing ban at Nazaré beach, in the Leiria district, has been lifted, the local Municipality announced today, following analyses that showed the water was clean.
